Govt settles outstanding scholarship grants

The government has settled outstanding scholarship grants of GH¢128 million owed by the Scholarship Secretariat to beneficiary students.

The Registrar of the Scholarship Secretariat, Mr Kinsley Agyeman, said the release of the amount this year was to ease the burden on students and parents.

He made this known last Monday when officials of the Scholarship Secretariat and the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Mr Frank Annor-Dompreh, interacted with students in the Nsawam/Adoagyiri District in the Eastern Region.

Local scholarship scheme

Mr Agyeman said the government had introduced a local tertiary scholarship scheme under which fees of beneficiary students were paid.
He said GH¢10 million had been paid so far to beneficiary students from the local tertiary scheme.

Mr Agyeman said the Scholarship Secretariat was going to allocate GH¢300,000 for the local tertiary scholarship programme for students in the Nsawam/Adoagyiri District to promote education in the area.

He pointed out that the introduction of the scholarship scheme was part of an effort by the government to vigorously decentralise the Scholarship Secretariat, adding that the aim was to enhance access to the services of the secretariat by scholarship applicants.

Quality education

In his remarks, Mr Annor-Dompreh said the advanced countries had been able to develop their economies due to the provision of quality education for the youth.

He said the introduction of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was to improve access and promote quality education and ,therefore, urged students in the district to take advantage of scholarship schemes in the country to further their education.
