Girls to pursue courses in technology

Sixty young girls from two communities in Accra have been selected to undergo an eight-week training programme to encourage girls  to develop an interest in pursuing science-related courses in future.

The girls, who are students at Nima and Maamobi, would undergo training on how to develop websites and applications (apps)  and work effectively with the various software applications.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, the wife of a former Vice-President, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, advised the young girls to be committed, determined and open-minded as they go through the training programme.

She said the programme was to help empower girls and transform their view of  technology and also create career opportunities for them.

Mrs Amissah-Arthur urged the DreamOval Foundation to continue to organise programmes which would equip young girls with knowledge and skills in technology  to have a long-lasting impact on them.

The Vice-President of the DreamOval Foundation, Mr Francis Ahene Affoh, said the mission of the foundation was to help children to live a fulfilled life by assisting in  the creation, sharing and use of knowledge in technology.

He explained that the programme, which was known as “Females in Technology,”  would help equip young girls from deprived  communities with knowledge and skills  in Information Communications and Technology (ICT).

“Girls empowerment is something that we seek to advance and if we fail to address girls’ differentiated needs and aspirations, a generation will be lost,”  Mr Ahene Affoh said.

Ms Ayisha Abdallah,  13, said she was very excited to be part of the training programme and hoped to acquire skills in ICT  to effect some changes in her community.

Ms Anayat Abubakar, a student of the St Kitizo Basic School, stated that after listening to Mr Ahene Affoh, she was motivated to study seriously.
