Ghanaian youth encouraged to seek entry to Oxford University

The Attaining The Peak (ATP) Oxford Africa Office on Wednesday organised an interactive session on ATP Oxford-Africa recruitment and capacity building at the British Council in Accra.

The session was to encourage more Ghanaians to see Oxford University as a realistic possibility for graduate studies.

Former students of Oxford University, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor; the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Peter Jones; a former Director of the Institute of African Studies of the University of Ghana, Professor George Hagan, and Mr Tsatsu Tsikata, a former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Authority, recounted their experiences at the university and said the school was among one of the best in the world that had produced many great leaders and scholars.

Former President Kufuor, a 1964 Economics and Political Science graduate of the Oxford University, urged students to be interested in applying to the university.

He said Oxford University had served as a nursery for British rulers and produced two-thirds of the Prime Ministers of Britain, including Margaret Thatcher.

He said Africa was seen as a backward continent in terms of certain events which took place on the continent.

The former President said seeking education at Oxford University, which attracted students from various continents with different backgrounds, would shape the minds of Ghanaians who studied there to assist Africa to find its proper position in the global village.

For his part, Mr Tsikata said Oxford University made one a thinker if he or she studied there.

He, however, advised prospective students of the university or any foreign university to first obtain their degrees at the local universities before pursuing their education at Oxford.

The Executive Director of ATP, Dr Emefa Juliet Takyi Amoako, said her outfit envisioned a day when all youth, wherever they were and whatever their backgrounds, would gain access to equal opportunities and develop as positive-minded people.
