'Ghana Reads' organised successfully in Accra
The second phase of “Ghana reads! Reading soiree & honours” has been organised at the British Council in Accra to promote the culture of reading among the Ghanaian populace, particularly the youth and children.
The programme, which coincided with the 2018 World Book Day was used to mark the day in Ghana with a mini-festival of book reading; reading workshops, books exhibition, and honouring of individuals and institutions promoting literary arts in the country.

The Mayor of Accra, Mr Mohammed Adjei-Sowah served as the special guest of honour while the Paramount Chief of Osu Traditional Area and President of the Greater Accra Region House of Chiefs, Nii Kinka Dowuona VI and the Wife of the former Vice President, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur co-chaired the event.

Among the dignitaries who attended the event included the former Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Ms Abla Dzifa Gomashie; the President of Ghana Books Publishers Association, Mr. Eliotte Agyare; Prof. Lade Wosornu; Naana Dumaaley VI, and Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio III.

The event was also graced by some institutions in the literary arts industry, including the Achievers Ghana; Korle Gonno Library; Ghandour Cosmetics; Citi FM and Class Fm.

The organizer of the programme, Oswald Okaitei, in a welcome address said the event is geared towards encouraging Ghanaians, especially children, and youth to develop an interest for reading fictional materials, especially those authored by Ghanaian writer and to bridge the gap between readers and authors as well as publishers.

He said it was also to draw the attention of children to the importance of reading to one’s social and academic life.
The programme, which was sponsored by the Adwinsa Publications Ltd, a Ghanaian publishing firm, was attended by students from different schools in the Greater Accra Region.
