UEW expands infrastructure to admit more students
As part of preparations to admit more first-year students in 2020, the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) is making conscious efforts to ensure infrastructural development to accommodate the anticipated increase in students’ enrollments.
With 13 faculties and 49 academic departments at Winneba, Ajumako, Kumasi and Asante Mampong campuses, the UEW’s current enrollment stands at 69,000, making it the most populated university in Ghana.

The vision of Rev Fr Prof Anthony Afful-Broni, the Vice Chancellor is to work assiduously to expand the infrastructure to accommodate the ever increasing numbers of new applicants who subscribe to the UEW, particularly graduates from the free senior high school (SHS) policy and the double track policy introduced by the government.
Ongoing projects
The projects currently ongoing are lecture halls, halls of residence, staff bungalows, lecturer’s offices, university hospital and commercial centre, among others which are dotted in all the four campuses of the UEW.
Work is currently ongoing on the construction of lecturers’ block at the Winneba campus to accommodate lecturers and create a more conducive working environment.
The project which is expected to be completed by the end of year has 200 offices for lecturers and 30 lecture halls.
Also, progress of work on two 2,000 bed hostel facilities is encouraging and is expected that both projects would be ready for use next year.
When completed, the university would receive a huge relief since more students would be accommodated on campus.
Additionally, work on the Institute for Distance and e-Learning (IDeL) study centres in Koforidua, Cape Coast, Kumasi-Onwe, Techiman and Accra were progressing at various stages and that management was optimistic that the projects would be ready soon.
Speaking to Graphic Online in Winneba after a tour of the project sites, Mr Ernest Azutigah, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the UEW said that move was in preparation towards admitting more students in 2020.
He noted that management was in the process to award contracts for the construction of four lecture hall facilities, two in Winneba and two others in other campuses to ensure that the university was fully ready to enroll more students.
“All the projects springing up in all our campuses point to the fact that the UEW was doing everything possible to ensure that the enabling learning environment were available to accommodate new students” he stated.
