Students warned against rushing to media with grievances

The Secretary of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Mr Julius Atikpui has warned students of the institute to desist from rushing to the media with their grievances.

He deplored the practice where students run to the media at the least to vent their spleen instead of availing themselves to the dispute resolutions of the institute.

That practice, he said was even eating into the body politic of the country where “we allow the media to run the country.”

Matriculation

Speaking at the matriculation ceremony of the Kumasi campus of GIMPA, Mr Atikpui said GIMPA would not allow the media to run the institute for them and advise the students to ensure that they used all channels of communication in addressing their grievances before running to the media.

Using an incident that happened at the main campus as a reference point, he said some students failed to turn out for the matriculation and were made to pay a fine before being allowed to matriculate.

According to him, some of these students who did not understand the rationale for the fine, run to the media to complain that they were being unnecessarily charged.

He explained that the institute hired tents and chairs for the programme and “when you failed to turn up for the matriculation and we have to hire the same tents and chairs to organise the same exercise for you, who should bear the cost.”

Responsibility

While admitting that most of the students were workers and had other responsibilities elsewhere, he said that could not be an excuse for them to be irresponsible and once they have applied to become students, they ought to ensure that they fulfil all the academic requirements.

The Kumasi Campus Manager of the institute, Dr Richard Boso, said the institute would from next year, introduce two new courses to make the institute more attractive to residents in the metropolis.

He said from next academic year, the institute would start running the Masters in Science (MSc) in Economics and also a LL.B programmes.

In all, 33 new students were matriculated.
