SHS students need guidance, counseling services— Justice Marful-Sau
A Justice of the Supreme Court Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, has called for the strengthening of guidance and counseling services in Senior High Schools (SHSs) to enable students to make the right career choices.
He said some students at the second cycle school level lacked proper guidance and counselling to enable them to make the right career choices based on their talents and potentials, hence the need to assist them develop their talents.
Addressing the 54th Speech and Prize Giving Day of the Breman Asikuma Senior High School (BASS) in the Central Region, he stated that some students chose courses and careers that did not help them to develop their talents and potentials, stressing that, “guidance and counselling coordinators in SHSs must be equipped and supported to become responsible adults to contribute to the growth and development of the country.”
The ceremony was also used to officially launch the 55th anniversary celebration of BASS. The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) used the occasion to hand over a nine-unit classroom block it had constructed for the school.
Refrain from deviant acts
Justice Marful-Sau who is an old student of BASS advised the students to remain disciplined and desist from deviant acts that could negatively affect their studies, saying “there is no way you can achieve higher academic performance if discipline is not your hallmark”.
He bemoaned recent reported immoral acts such as rape, defilement, smoking, occultism, hooliganism in some senior high schools, adding that, “it would be in your own interest if you avoided such acts.”
He charged the management of the school to take immediate steps to protect and secure the 88-acre land on which the school was situated to prevent further encroachment.
Continuous support
The Omanhene of the Breman Traditional Area, Odeefuo Amoakwa Buadu VIII, appealed to the government, past students and other stakeholders to continue to make meaningful contributions to address the challenges confronting the school.
The Headmaster of the school, Mr James Bambel, expressed gratitude to the government and past students for their contributions to the growth and development of the school and further appealed for support from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to complete an abandoned six-unit staff bungalow to improve accommodation for the teaching staff on campus.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Mr Anthony Effah, promised to construct a GH₵75,000 building facility for the school’s Home Economics Department to enhance both theoretical and practical teaching of the course.
