Ghana Association of French Teachers sets goal

The Ghana Association of French Teachers (GAFT) is to fashion out new and effective strategies and methods to transform the learning of the language.

“We are ever ready to do our best to help the Ghanaian learner study French to any level,” Mr Justice K. Sallah, the President of the GAFT, said at the 55th annual congress of the association in Ho.

The GAFT, with the support of the French Embassy, instituted a reading competition among French students in  the 10 regions this year.

Champions in  the regions will compete in a national championship with attractive prizes at stake.

Mr Sallah called for support from institutions and philanthropists to augment the sponsorship of the French Embassy.

He said the association undertook a number of  activities to sharpen the skills of its members.

The Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Francis Ganyaglo, said the study of French was imperative because of the country’s geographical location among French-speaking neighbours.

“Most intriguing is that our businesses are transacted across these francophone countries and documentation is in French. Another reason why we need to take French seriously is that it has become one of the basic requirements for getting international appointments,” he said.

Mr Ganyaglo said the long-standing and fruitful relations between Ghana and France had lowered the language barrier.

“French is, therefore, not to be considered as an academic exploit but a tool for social and economic development,” he added.

He appealed to GAFT and Alliance Francaise to consider the establishment of educational programme centres across the region and other parts of the country.

Mr Dickson Ogordor, a Deputy Regional director of Education, said apart from making one productive and functional, proficiency in French provided a number of job opportunities and prospects for career development.
