Dr Tandoh committed to advance goals, vision of GES
The newly appointed acting Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Quality and Access, Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, has pledged to bring on board a wealth of diversified education and training experience to his new role at the GES.
He said his role was to ensure that there was quality teaching and learning in the classrooms and pledged to work with his superiors and other staff to achieve the goals and vision of the service to improve the country’s education.
He said the vision of the Director-General of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwa, was to produce “students who are academically very strong, morally upright and are engaged in their civic responsibility and as a deputy director-general, I am to help him alongside Lawyer Anthony Boateng, who is also the Deputy Director-General in charge of Management Services, to achieve these goals.”
His role
Outlining his role as a deputy director-general in charge of quality and access, Dr Tandoh, who was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, said he was happy that the basic requirement of teachers now was a first degree, explaining that it would improve the quality of teaching in the country.
Dr Tandoh, who until his appointment was the Instructional Coordinator for the World Bank on the Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP) for the GES, said in terms of access, the government was using the securitisation of the GETFund to improve the structures in schools.
Who is Dr Tandoh?
Dr Tandoh is a certificated educationist and a consummate education professional who holds PhD from the St Louis University, USA, where his PhD thesis was on “High education leadership and administration.”
He also holds a Master of Social Work and a BA in Urban Studies both from the University of Connecticut, also in the USA.
Dr Tandoh attended Prempeh College in Kumasi and East Hartford High School in the USA for his high school education.
Work experience
Dr Tandoh was appointed on a tenured term as the Executive Director of the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Schools with specific transformational mandate.
During his tenure at AGA, he established the Williams and Brew School as a University of Cambridge Accredited school. He also served as the first Principal of the RisingSun Montessori Schools in Accra.
While in the United States, he served as Head of Programme at the Faculty of Human Services at Saint Louis Community College; Director of Multicultural and International Affairs at Millikin University; Programmes Coordinator of the Health Professions Partnership Initiative at the University of Connecticut Health Centre and Adjunct Professor of Sociology at the University of Hartford.
Consultancy
As the Lead Consultant for the Goodwin College, USA, he established Goodwin College Ghana, where he served as the Executive Director.
His consulting experiences include work for Christ The Cornerstone (CTC) International Schools in Lagos, Nigeria, where he served as the Vice Principal for Academic and Student Affairs and at Ghana Christian University College where he was an advisor to the President on Institutional Advancement.
Dr Tandoh has also consulted for several institutions and trained teaching and non-teaching staff at the Ghana International School (GIS), Springforth Community School and Aspire Educational Complex in Koforidua.
He also served as a Legislative Aide to Connecticut State Senator Gary D. LeBeau, as well as a Legislative Liaison to the University of Connecticut Health Centre.
Leadership
As part of his leadership grooming, he was selected as an Ambassador and Fellow for UNESCO Comparative Human Rights.
His interests include academic research and data interpretation in school leadership, student development and learning outcomes.
He is also a dedicated family man and a keen sports enthusiast.
