Assembly to construct 3-unit classroom block for Akulyoo Primary

The Bongo District Assembly is to construct a three-unit classroom block at a cost of GH¢ 196,000 for the Akulyoo Primary School in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo, Mr Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, provided land for the construction of the classrooms.

He indicated that the project, with ancillary facilities, was expected to be completed within six months to complement an already-existing three-classroom block for the school.

Increased population

Mr Ayamga said the school, which was established in 2013 with a three-unit classroom block and an office, now had a population of 183, but the inadequacy of the classrooms was inhibiting the enrolment of more pupils.

The DCE called on inhabitants of the Akulyoo community to support the contractor to complete the project on schedule and also assist the school’s management in safeguarding the school property.

Own the school

Mr Ayamga urged them not to politicise the award of the contract or regard the school as a government property, indicating: "All of us make up the government, we own the school as a community."

He gave an assurance that the district works engineer and staff of the Planning Unit would monitor the works from the beginning to the end to ensure value for money and for the project to be executed according to specification.

The DCE disclosed that the Akulyoo community would soon be hooked to the national electrification grid, which would assist students and pupils in their studies.

Teachers quarters

The Chief of Akulyoo, Naba Asampambire Akaribo, thanked the assembly for the project and appealed for a teacher’s quarters for the school since majority of the teachers commuted from long distances to the school, which was affecting teaching and learning due to the loss of contact hours.

The DCE and the technical staff of the assembly visited some project sites being executed by the assembly.

They visited the Zorko Senior High School where it came to light that a 24-unit two-storey classroom block complex had been abandoned by the contractor.

The DCE, expressing his dismay at the contractor’s behaviour, indicated his resolve to ensure the completion of the project to ameliorate the accommodation problems confronting the school.

He also visited the Zorko Market to inspect a 10-seater KVIP flush toilet site near the market estimated at a cost of GH¢ 165,000.

Public-Private Partnership

Mr Ayamga said upon completion of the toilet facility, it would be handed over to a private individual under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement to operate and manage, and a percentage of the revenue generated paid to the assembly.

On the market itself, he said there was the need for a properly drawn plan to create enough space for the market, as well as create access routes for vehicles carrying goods into the market.

The DCE later visited the Namoo Customs and Immigration barrier - which is an entry point to Burkina Faso - and interacted with the personnel who called for the tarring of the Namoo-Bongo road to boost economic activities.

His last port of call was the Namoo Health Centre where the staff complained of inadequate space among other challenges.
