Accra Wesley Girls’ High School calls for help

The Headmistress of the Accra Wesley Girls’ High School (A Wey Gey Hey), Mrs Cynthia B.Essibrey-Annan, has appealed to the government and stakeholders to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of the school by providing it with adequate infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning.

She said it was unfortunate that successive governments had failed to provide the school with the necessary infrastructure after taking over the school’s management from the Methodist Church years ago.

Mrs Essibrey-Annan made the appeal at the third Speech and Prize-giving Day celebration of the school in Accra.

The theme for the occasion was “Mobilising for national development, the girl child in perspective.”

Science laboratory

She emphasised that the school lacked a science laboratory, which made it difficult to admit students to read General Science programme, in addition to lack of classroom blocks to cater for the Home Economics and Visual Arts students.

“It is very sad to note that since the government took over the administration of the school from the Methodist Church, there has not been any infrastructural development by the government even though the school has made the necessary efforts,” she said.

Additionally, Mrs Essibrey-Annan stated that the school urgently needed accommodation for the staff, as well as the head, a fence to prevent thieves and intruders, a vehicle for official duties and a bigger canteen for the students.

While lauding the government’s free senior high school(SHS) programme, she was quick to add that the number of students admitted intothe school called for immediate intervention by the government “to avert any disaster” adding that “these challenges need urgent attention for effective teaching and learning and health and safety environment”.

Melcom awarded

The occasion was used to honour Melcom Group of Companies and other organisations for their continuous support to the school.

In a citation, the school indicated that Melcom had provided immense support to A Wey Gey Hey, acknowledging the furnishing of its sick bay.

The citation also acknowledged Melcom’s support for the Speech and Prize-giving Day, as well as sponsoring awards for the Overall Best Students in English,Mathematics and Science.

The Director of Communication of Melcom, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, who was the Guest
Speaker, also expressed appreciation to the management of the school for acknowledging the efforts of the company.

Earlier in his address, Mr Avenorgbo stated that the development of the girl-child was the responsibility of both teachers and parents who were key stakeholders in education.

He encouraged the students to aim high to attain the best professions, “but in doing so let me remind you that there is still life after work and retirement where vocation takes over from profession
