Each beneficiary school received 40 of the laptops to equip its computer laboratory.

The distribution of the laptops is a partnership project between the government and Rlg, a local telecommunications company.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Sunyani Senior High School (SUSEC) yesterday, the sector minister, Dr Joe Oteng-Adjei, said it formed part of the government's Better Ghana Agenda Laptops Programme, which was initiated in 2010.

Second phase

The programme started with the distribution of laptops to individuals, but the second phase is targeting schools.

At least 40,000 laptops have been earmarked for distribution to 800 public and private schools accredited by the Ghana Education Service.

Dr Oteng-Adjei said the laptops were not meant for the personal use of teachers but that of the schools and students.

He, therefore, urged the school authorities to follow laid-down rules to ensure that the computers were used by the students.

The Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, appealed to the beneficiary schools to use them judiciously to enhance their knowledge in information and communications technology (ICT).

He also entreated them to maintain the computers.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, Dr George Adjei-Hinne, on behalf of the beneficiary schools, thanked the government and its partners for the  computers and expressed the hope that the students would take advantage of the laptops to study ICT.

A representative of Rlg, Mr Asante Yaw Ofosu, said the company would continue to partner the government in every effort to provide computers for schools.
