20 Awarded scholarships to pursue master’s programmes

Twenty officials from ministries, governmental institutions and agencies in Ghana have been awarded scholarships to pursue master’s programmes in the Republic of Korea.

The beneficiaries, who are among others from other countries, would be provided with tuition fees, accommodation, air tickets and monthly stipends, fully sponsored by the Korean Government.

They will pursue programmes in fishery science, global health development, international trade and policy, global e-policy and e-governance, among others

The scholarships are meant to provide the officials with a broader knowledge in their specific areas of study to help the country design effective development policies, and to be able to use sustainable technologies to enhance national development.

Mode of selection

Speaking at an orientation workshop for the beneficiaries in Accra last Thursday, the Country Director of the Korea International

Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Mr Woochan Chang, said the awardees were selected through a competitive selection process for people who applied from 50 other countries.

He explained that the applicants were taken through a series of tests and interviews and those who passed were selected.

“KOICA does not just provide the scholarship opportunity to individuals but interested persons are allowed to apply and they are taken through a competition with participants from more than 50 other countries to select the best out of them,” he said.

Mr Chang added that the beneficiaries would study in different universities in Korea for 15 to 18 months, after which they would return to Ghana and use their expertise and knowledge to help develop their respective countries.

“Because the courses are different, the awardees would go to different universities. However, the maximum stay there is 18 months after which they would return to serve their country,” he added.

He stated that so far,100 officials from Ghana had benefitted from the scheme and completed their master’s degree programmes in various courses in selected universities in Korea.

Orientation

The orientation was meant to give the awardees an insight into what was expected of them and how to begin their new lives in Korea.
It was also meant to afford them the opportunity to interact with the management of KOICA in Ghana.
