11 honoured for projecting Wesley College

As part of the 90th anniversary celebration of the establishment of  Wesley College of Education in Kumasi, the authorities of the institution have honoured 11 key personalities for their invaluable contributions that have over the years projected the image of the  institution. Some edifices and facilties in the college were also named after some of the personalities to immortalise their contribution to the college.

They include Rev. C. Armstrong,  Mr S H. Amissah, Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia, Mr Adjin Tettey and Mr Joseph Eshun- Famiyeh.

 Rev. Armstrong, a British, was honoured for his pioneering role as the first Principal of the college whose efforts led to the college to being transferred from Aburi in the Eastern Region to its present location.

Mr Amissah, on the other hand,received the honour in recognition of the outstanding discipline, academic excellence and values he exhibited when he was a student of the college between 1925 and 1928 .

According to the Principal, Mr Joseph Eshun-Famiyeh, due to his academic prowess, coupled with his moral values, sense of dedication and commitment to duty, Mr Amissah  was  recruited to teach in the college as soon as he graduated, and in 1952 when the last British Principal left the college, he was appointed as the first black principal of the institution .

Another personality who was honoured was Rt. Rev. Dr E. H. Brew-Riverson, who after graduation, became the second African Principal of Wesley College.

Others who were honoured were Madam Juliana Armstrong–Mensah,  J.T. Essuman, Madam Sophia Okuley, J.E.K. Armah all of whom after graduating returned to teach at the college and  Mr J.W. Amissah,whose performance in football, whilst a student, contributed immensely to create fear for opposing teams during inter college football encounters.

Touching on the programme for the celebration of the 90th anniversary which would be climaxed on November 24, 2012, Mr Eshun-Famiyeh said the college would hold fun games between current and former students of the college, a lecture dubbed the Armstrong- Amissah memorial lecture, a symposium, a grand durbar and a thanksgiving service.
