Grooming mistakes to avoid (2)

asic make up should enhance and not distract from your features. So many ladies have become mega confused with regard to what is fashionable and not. They assume that anything and everything goes all in the name of trying to look fashionable and trendy.

However, this notion should be dispelled with.

As ladies, start by identifying and defining who you really are; what image and message you want to communicate across your audience, and then dress accordingly.

If you would like to project a conservative and private image, then avoid wearing bright multicoloured clothes. Rather opt for subtle colours, otherwise you will become automatically visible to observers for the wrong reasons.

We need to remember that there is a common consensus that binds a large group of people with regard to what is deemed acceptable within our social cultural setting.

Therefore conforming to societal expectations of us becomes a must if we are keen on gaining the respect and honour due us.

That said let us examine some fashion blunders committed by us women in the name of fashion and style.

 • Colourful make-up: Basic make up should enhance and not distract from your features. Make-up should be subtle and sophisticated; not painted up and drab.

In some instances, just some loose powder and simple lip gloss is ok. Note the difference between what is considered make-up for the day as compared to that for the night.  No bright, colourful eye shadows and blushers during the daytime!

 • Over-accessorising: The key point to remember always is that accessories should complement and overtake your clothes!

Wearing multiple necklaces, bracelets, and bangle ear rings is certainly not in good taste. Yes, we know you have many but simple jewellery enhances your clothes and blends with the image you are trying to portray.

 • Matching your colours: You should never wear the same colours of clothes and accessories. It makes you rather invisible because there is no contrast of colours in your clothes.

Mix and match and rather opt to wear similar colours and NOT exactly matching colours.

• Your waist beads: These are colourful beads worn as accessories to enhance our beauty as women. They should not be exposed to public view.

If our forefathers wanted them exposed to the public they would have asked us to wear them on our clothes and not under!

• Bad hair: Your hair must be kept clean and always tidy. Wash and condition your hair at least once week to get rid of the dirt and dandruff.

Avoid large weaves which make your face look lost in them!  Natural braids are now in vogue and a lot of ladies have been observed spotting them.

Note however, that it takes a lot of work to maintain them. So if you don’t have the time to invest in their upkeep, do not wear one at all!

• Armpit hair: Learn to shave your armpit regularly. There is nothing attractive about a lady walking around with a patch of bush under her arms. Serious fashion blunder, ladies!

• Killer shoes: Yes we know platform shoes are in vogue but is that the reason to break your back wearing uncomfortable shoes in the name of fashion?

Look, your back should last you a lifetime. Any shoe that feels remotely uncomfortable should not be worn.

• Sport nails not claws: Some ladies assume that it is fashionable to have overly long nails. Maintaining them becomes a problem especially as the longer they grow, the more claw-like in appearance they look.

Guys avoid these ladies for fear of having their eyes scratched out! So keep your nails simple and well groomed.

• Bad-fitting clothes: Sometimes while attempting to hide a large stomach or arm, some ladies go for big clothes. This is not advisable as it makes them look more bulky.

There are so many well-fitting clothes which can do the job. Just ask those who know. To look good, your clothes must fit you well.

• Same line of clothes:  Mix and match up your clothes and alternate your style. Avoid being a one-way dresser that anyone can predict what you will wear.

Learn to co-ordinate your accessories or get someone to show you how to do so.

• Fashion Maniacs: Ladies who pride themselves as so-called “Fashion Conscious” should be careful about committing fashion fraud.

As you know, not everything trendy and in vogue is fashionable and meant for you. Learn to be your true self and learn to know what will always work for you.

For some of you ladies who in the past committed these fashion crimes, you are forgiven.  However, for those of you refusing to mend your grooming mistakes, we urge you to repent and change your ways.
