Having sex makes almost half of men feel sad - study

A new study has revealed that 40 per cent of men feel sad, tearful or irritable after making love.

While this ‘postcoital dysphoria’ has previously been recognised in women, researchers from Queensland University of Technology were interested to see if it also occurred in men.

The team surveyed 1,208 men from Australia, the US, UK, Russia, New Zealand and Germany about their feelings after sex.

Results revealed that 41 per cent of the participants have experienced postcoital dysphoria , with 20 per cent saying it had happened in the last four weeks.

The researchers also delved deeper into these feelings, asking the men exactly how they felt.

Comments included ‘I feel unsatisfied, annoyed and very fidgety’ and ‘I feel emotionless and empty’.

The findings suggest that the male experience of sex could be more complex than previously thought.

Professor Robert Schweitzer, co-author of the study, said: “The first three phases of the human sexual response cycle - excitement, plateau, and orgasm - have been the focus of the majority of research to date.

"The experience of the resolution phase remains a bit of a mystery and is therefore poorly understood.”
