“We are exploring the possibility of adopting the Junior Graphic, so that children will be encouraged to read and also write articles on sanitation to the paper for publication,” the Communications Manager of Zoomlion, Mr Robert Coleman, hinted.

He said the company would bear part of the cost of the paper, so that it would be delivered to most schools free of charge.

Mr Coleman made this known during a health walk and quiz by Zoomkids clubs from three schools at Madina in Accra last Friday.

The walk was to rejuvenate the clubs and also create awareness of sanitation in the country.

Background of Zoomkids clubs

The Zoomkids Club was formed as part of the corporate social responsibility of Zoomlion Ghana Limited. The clubs are environmental sanitation entities in basic schools, with the objective of making schoolchildren aware of as well as inculcate in them good environmental and sanitation practices.

Currently, there are 450 Zoomkids clubs nationwide and their activities, include routine talks on health, personal and environmental hygiene delivered by patrons and health workers, beautification exercises in schools, as well as clean-up and tree planting exercises at selected places.

Advice to Zoomkids

Mr Coleman said regardless of the number of workers Zoomlion employed or how sophisticated the equipment that would be deployed, “if we don’t engender attitudinal or behavioural change, we will not be able to make any significant headway when it comes to sanitation”.

Managing Director of Zoomlion

In her address, the Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs Florence Larbi, urged the public to desist from verbally abusing sanitation workers.

She said the practice disheartened the workers and they in turn failed to give of their best.

Mrs Larbi also advised the children to cultivate the habit of keeping their surroundings clean and be ambassadors of change in the area of sanitation.

After a competitive one-hour quiz, Sowah Din Basic School emerged the winner, with the St Augustus and Baba Yara Basic Schools placing second and third, respectively.

The winners were presented with educational materials and encouraged to study hard.
