Take study of French seriously

The Director of the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), Mr Guy E. Armarteifio, has challenged the youth, especially school leavers, to take the study of French seriously.

He said the GLA had made available enough French textbooks in all the regional libraries to cater for the study of the language at all levels.

Mr Armarteifio, who is also the Regional Librarian of the Greater Accra Regional Library, told the Junior Graphic that there was a growing interest in the French language by the youth.

He disclosed that all the regional libraries contained French departments which offered tuition in French free of charge to all interested people.

He added that there were many audio tapes and video materials to facilitate the learning process.

He said since the introduction of the French departments at the libraries, many students had thronged them to see things for themselves.

Mr Armarteifio reminded the youth that Ghana was surrounded by Francophone countries, a fact which made it very important for every citizen to have a fair knowledge of French to enable them communicate with their sub-regional counterparts.

He said the rationale behind the establishment of the French departments in the regional libraries throughout the country was to complement what went on in the classrooms and also open the door to everybody interested in learning French.

“The tuition, which is daily, is open to learners of all ages. In addition, the GLA is making moves to make French tutors available in all the regional libraries,” he said.

Mr Armarteifio added that the GLA had also instituted reading, debating and quiz clubs in all the regional libraries.
