St Louis, T.I. AMASS girls smash records at Ashanti athletics Super Zonals
Barely two weeks after setting a new national record in discus throw at the Inter-School and Colleges Athletics Competition in the Ashanti Region, Patience Boahemaa of the Saint Louis SHS smashed that record with an even better throw of 35.80metres.
Boahemaa, during the Zone Three competition, broke an old record of 33.40 metres set by Rashaka Katada of the T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (T.I.AMASS) in 2015 with a throw of 33.66m and delivered the super zonal title on her promise when she said her aim was to improve her throw.
The latest record at the Baba Yara Stadium set on her second throw on the opening day of the two-day Super Zonal competition last Thursday, helped her school finish second behind competition favourites, T.I.AMASS.
In a competition that attracted spectators, as well as impressive performances, Rashida Abass of T.I.
AMASS also broke a 17-year-old record when she made a throw of 11.94 metres in the ladies shot put, beating Mary Nartey Zuta of the Osei Kyeretwie Secondary School (OKESS)’s throw of 11.70 metres in 2002.
In the males division, as expected, T.I.AMASS won most of the events but it was the 4x400m relay that thrilled spectators as it turned out to be a strong race among T.I.AMASS, OKESS, Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) and the Prempeh College.
In the females event, T.I.AMASS topped with 46 points, the St Louis SHS took second place with 37 points, while the Kumasi Girls’ SHS placed third with 35 points.
The Obuasi Secondary-Technical School finished fourth with 25 points, and the Kumasi Wesley Girls’ High School placed fifth with 22 points.
In the boys category, T.I.AMASS-Kumasi retained their top spot with 35 points, the Obuasi Sec Tech beat OWASS and Prempeh College to take the second place bagging 25 points, with the latter schools finishing third and fourth with 24 and 20 points respectively.
Jachie Pramso finished fifth with 14 points.
Traditionally, the Ashanti Region Super Zonals has been one of the most competitive schools track and field events in the country given the rivalry among the top schools and the performances of the athletes, most of whom have moved on to become national stars.
The two-day event was graced by former national sprint king, Emmanuel ‘Koora’ Tuffour and World Bronze Medalist in heptathlon, Margaret Simpson.
