Solar lamps for 200 pupils

Two hundred schoolchildren in three communities of the Asutifi District in the Brong Ahafo Region will receive solar lamps when schools reopen in September to assist them study in the evening.
Vivo Energy Ghana, formerly Shell Ghana in collaboration with, Newmont Ghana Gold Limited (NGGL), operating in the Ahafo Mine in the district, is  donating  the lamps under the, ‘‘Energy for Education Project.’’

The three beneficiary communities, Ntotroso, Kenyasi Number One and Two, are mainly resettlement areas for those affected by the mining operations of the company.

It would be recalled that in February this year, the NGGL distributed over 1,250 solar lamps to schoolchildren in some of its host communities to help them study in the evenings.

Mr Augustine Osei-Bonsu, a Director of Vivo Energy Ghana handed over the lamps to the community leaders for onward distribution to the pupils.

Speaking at the function, he said, ‘‘We acknowledge that, the delivery of electric power is not sufficient in many of our small towns and villages and the reading needs of school pupils, especially girls after normal school hours, are negatively affected.’’

The External Affairs Manager of NGGL, Ahafo Mine, Mr Kojo Bedu-Addo, commended Vivo for initiating the project and encouraged all other vendors of NGGL who had benefited from the operations of the Ahafo Mine to contribute  towards  the development  of the host communities.
