Regional library records high patronage

Statistics from the Accra Regional Library indicate that more people are now visiting the regional library.

For instance, from January to March this year, as many as 23,494 people patronised the library as compared to 25,120 patrons for the whole of last year.

The Greater Accra Regional Librarian, Mr Guy E. Armarteifio, who disclosed this in an interview, said out of the total number for the first quarter, 10,349 were teenagers and the remaining 13,469 were adults.

Mr Armarteifio expressed satisfaction at the number of students doing their research and other academic work in the libraries and called on the youth to seek more knowledge by patronising libraries.

He said in 2012, an average monthly attendance of 2,723 readers visited the library, with an annual figure of 10,399 readers registering at the lending unit of the library.

Mr Armarteifio explained that the Ghana Library Authority had re-introduced the door-to-door outreach programme which was stopped sometime ago to transport reading materials to readers, both in schools and community centres.

Computers and Internet accessories are also conveyed in mobile vans to deprived schools to assist students in the study of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in basic schools.

Mr Armarteifio said the initiative had become necessary as a result of the distance students had to travel to libraries.
