Nkoranza North tops 2013 BECE
The Nkoranza North District in the Brong Ahafo Region topped the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) nationwide with 98.61 per cent of its candidates getting admissions to senior high schools (SHSs) and technical institutes (TIs).

The district presented 647 candidates, out of which 638 gained admission to SHSs and TIs.
The second position was taken by the Obuasi District in the Ashanti Region, which had 95.23 per cent of its candidates qualifying and entering SHSs. Out of a total of 4,697 candidates presented for the BECE, 4,473 made it to the second cycle level.
The ranking of the performance of the districts in the 2013 BECE was compiled by the Statistics, Research, Information, Management and Public Relations (SRIMPR) Division of the Ministry of Education.
A copy of the ranking report made available to the Junior Graphic, showed that 167 districts, as captured by the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC), were covered in the compilation exercise.
According to the ranking, the Bibiani/Anhiaso/Bekwai District in the Western Region came third with 94.17 per cent of candidates making it to SHSs and TIs. In all, 2,968 candidates in the area sat for the examination and 2,795 qualified.
In fourth place was the Adansi North District, also in the Ashanti Region. Out of the total of 2,138 candidates, 1,993, representing 93.22 per cent qualified.
The Sefwi Akontombra District in the Western Region took the fifth position with 93.19 per cent of the candidates making it to SHSs and TIs. Eight hundred and eighty-nine out of the 954 candidates presented for the BECE qualified.
The Nokoranza South, Juabeso, Dormaa, Atwima Kwanwoma and Atwima Nwabiagya districts placed sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
Three districts in the Greater Accra Region, Ledzekuku, Ga South and Ga West came 16th, 17th and 18th, while the Cape Coast District, considered to be the citadel of education in Ghana, placed 101st.
In the last five positions, the Upper Manya (Eastern Region), Sissala West (Upper West), Builsa (Upper West), East Gonja (Northern) and Savelugu Nanton, also in the Northern Region placed 163rd, 164th, 165th, 166th and 167th respectively.
Reacting to the report, a Deputy Minister of Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, told the Junior Graphic that there was the need to find out what worked for the Nkoranza North District so that it could be replicated in other districts.
For her part, the Head of the SRIMPR Division of the Ministry of Education, Ms Veronica Nuamah-Kutin, noted that the overall performance of candidates who wrote the BECE last year was good.
