NGO sensitises children on effects of early marriage

Schoolchildren at the Kanda Cluster of Schools have been sensitised about the effects child marriages have on girls and their future development.

The programme was organised by the Ghana Non Governmental Organisation Coalition on the Rights of the Child, (GNGOCRC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Protection to celebrate the International Day of the Girl-Child which fell on October 11, 2017.

The theme for the celebration was: “Empower girls: before, during and after crisis.”

The pupils were educated on the factors that led to child marriages which included poverty, illiteracy, peer pressure, single parenting and exposure to sexual activities.

The Executive Director of the Family Matters Foundation, Mrs Irene Lorwia -Zakpaa, advised the girls not to stay silent when issues such as the abuse of their rights and forced marriages occur in their families.

She encouraged them to confide in their teachers or anybody in authority that they trusted so that action could be taken to protect them.

A Project Coordinator of the Child Marriage Unit, Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Protection, Mr Foster Adzraku, said girls should be empowered to perform very well and become great leaders and advised the girls to take their education seriously.

He noted that the unit needed their support to be able to stop the acts of abuse of their rights.

The Vice Chairperson of the Girls not Bride Ghana, Ms Eunice Maasodong, encouraged all girls to take control of their lives and not be damaged by what people would say against them or sway from the path which they had chosen to develop themselves.
