NCCE organises quiz contest for Sekyere South schools

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised an inter-school quiz competition for pupils in the Sekyere South District at Agona in the Ashanti Region to teach them on their fundamental human rights in order to effectively contribute their quota to the socio-economic development of the country.

The move, which sought to empower the schoolchildren to be responsible adults in future was under the theme: “Restoring our Ghanaian values, the role of the Ghanaian Child”.

The students were tasked to read and understand the laws enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, so that they would be well informed in order not to undermine the rules and regulations of the country.

They were also grilled to share their views on the illegal mining activities (galamsey) and its consequences on the people.

At the end of the competition, Tabre Experimental JHS won with 67 points while Amoakohene JHS placed second with 64 points.

The Agona Presbyterian JHS and Kona D/A1 JHS placed third and fourth respectively.

Addressing the students on the 17th Annual Constitutional Week celebration, the District Director of the NCCE, Mr Evans Nunoo, reaffirmed the NCCE’s motivation in creating a platform where views of children could be solicited and considered for inclusion in the laws of the country when the constitution is being revised.

According to Mr Nunoo, in order not to take risk of having a citizenry that was constitutionally illiterate, it was incumbent on the organisation to organise frequent programmes for the citizenry in order for them to appreciate the legal and cultural setting of the country.

These, he said, included the Annual Democracy lecture, Annual Citizenship Week, the Ghana Constitution Games, Social Auditing Programmes, formation of Constitutional Clubs in basic schools, as well as community durbars.

He, however, appealed to the authorities of the various schools in the district not to exempt its pupils and students from the numerous initiatives being undertaken by the NCCE to deepen nationalism.

The District Director of Education, Mrs Joselyn Asante-Boamah, in a speech read on her behalf by Mr Divine Wunu, the Logistics and Procurement Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), commended authorities of the participating schools for partnering the NCCE.

He assured the NCCE of continuous partnership in ensuring that children were given the necessary guidance in realising their potential.

The Quiz Master, Mr Asamoah Badu, who doubles as a Civic Education Officer of the NCCE, called on the GES to allocate some funds to support NCCE in order to spearhead its numerous educative activities and adequately prepare the young ones to become responsible adults in future.

He also advocated for the adoption of civic education in the GES school curriculum, which he said when executed could strengthen the children’s participation in the development of the country.

The event was supported by Indomie Instant Noodles, Sekyere Rural Bank, and the Okomfo Anokye Rural Bank.
