The mobile service will also enable schoolchildren who do not have the means to visit the library regularly to have access to books of their choice to read and build on their vocabulary.

The Greater Accra Regional Librarian of the Ghana Library Authority, Mr Guy Amarteifio, who made this known in a welcome address during the celebration and awards day of the International Children’s Book Day said, this would enhance the door-to-door services to schools which the regional libraries had already embarked on.

He said so far, the Information Communications Technology (ICT) centre at the Accra Central Library had trained about 431 basic school students this year and added that, the training had benefited students who usually used the centre for their ICT practicals.

The International Children’s Book Day, which is celebrated annually in remembrance of Hans Christian Andersen, a great writer of children’s books, was on the theme: “Bookjoy Around the World.”

This year’s celebration brought together schoolchildren from 15 basic schools in the Accra Metropolis. They competed in quizzes, spelling bee, essay writing, reading, drama, poetry recitals, cultural displays and singing competitions.

Master Jacob Afful, a pupil of the Akweibo Basic School, who took the Overall Best Speller Award in the Upper Primary Category said, he read as many books as he could in his free time; ‘’I am sure continuous reading really helped me to take the ultimate prize.”

In all, 45 prizes and certificates were awarded to deserving schoolchildren based on their positions in the various competitions.

The celebration of the day was supported by the Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Ghana Library Association; Afram Publications, Sam Woode, Adwinsa Publications, Lantern Books, EPP Books Services, MJP Books Limited and the Ghana Library Authority.
