Meet DJ Switch - Talented Kidz whizz-kid

Unlike her female peers who showcased their talents through singing, acting, poetry recitals or dancing, Erica Armah Bulu Tandoh, popularly known as DJ Switch, took to Disc Jockeying (DJ).

Her sterling display on the turntable was a novelty— it was the first time for a girl of her age in the history of the reality show, Talented Kidz to tread that path.

The decision to exhibit her skills as a DJ for the reality show was not entirely her choice. The real brain behind it was her mother, Ms Lilian Oduro-Mensah, who spotted the art of deejaying in her and believed she could excel if she had the opportunity.

Erica’s mother got a professional to train and prepare her specifically for the reality show. That got Erica attached to DJ Fuad, her trainer.

Recounting how it all started, Ms Oduro-Mensah said Erica mounted pressure on her to get her headphones to listen to music. Although she was good at other activities and could perform excellently, Ms Oduro-Mensah said she knew Erica’s best shot was disc jockeying.

“Erica is an active-eight-year old girl who is good in everything that has to do with entertainment, including rapping, dancing, singing etc. All you have to do is to teach her what to do and leave the rest to her”, she said with a beaming smile.

Speaking to the Junior Graphic, Erica explained that her dream was to become a gynaecologist to help deal with diseases associated with the female reproductive system, however, she would as well develop her skills in deejaying.

According to her, to become a doctor meant she had to take her studies seriously so she would be focused and study hard at school.

She also entreated her mates to study hard so all children would be responsible and successful adults in future.

“I believe that if all of us children study very hard, we would be great leaders for our dear country in future”, she noted.

Her parents described her as respectful, focused and hardworking, “a daughter every parent would love to have”.

Her father, Mr Eric Theophilus Tandoh who was mostly behind the scenes, explained that all relevant equipment needed for Erica’s development in deejaying was procured for her.
“I massively support Erica in her progress both in school and deejaying, therefore, I do not want her to lack anything in these areas,” he said.

Performances

Erica has performed in shows such as “Ghana meets Naija”, International Day of the African Child, a programme dubbed: “Fathers Day” at the Lizzy Sports Complex in Accra among others after winning the reality show.

She was also the special guest of honour at this year’s DJs Awards held at the Silver Star Tower in Accra.

Background

After three weeks of competition, Erica beat seven others and emerged the winner of the Talented Kidz show organised by TV3 last May.

She was presented with a cheque for GH¢10,000, a GH¢6,000 educational fund and products from the sponsors of the competition.
