Jessica wins National Hard Spell and Quiz contest
Miss Jessica Akplau, a student of the De Youngsters International School in Accra, was adjudged the Overall Best in the Junior High School Category at the 8th edition of the National Hard Spell and Quiz Competition held in Cape Coast recently.
She scored 18 points to win in both the oral and written contests and was awarded a certificate.
Master Israel Nana Kweku Okyere of the Glory Hills International School in Accra took the Overall Best prize in the Primary School Category with 17 points.
Other awardees were Otey Melody, Shadrack Tetteh, Emmanuella B. Darko, Edgar Okyere Gyamfi, Christabel Gabienu and Benedict Afadzinu.
A total of 140 schoolchildren participated in this year’s competition, with eight being rewarded for their outstanding performance.
Mrs Bridget Lartey, the Administrator of Edupro Concept Ventures, which organised the competition, said engaging children in such exercises would help them imbibe the habit of reading.
She said during the competition, the participants were exposed to new words which would help build their vocabulary and motivate them to study hard.
Mrs Lartey urged parents to prevent their children from wasting their precious time on movies and rather encourage them to read widely.
The Head Pastor of the Bethel Assemblies of God Church, Ola, Rev. Samuel Paa Kissi, advised children to pay great attention to their education.
He stressed the need for students to use their time profitably by reading more in order to add value to themselves and improve on their academic performance.
He explained that reading with understanding enabled children to make good and informed choices and also broaden their vocabulary.
Rev. Kissi further admonished parents to pay close attention to their children’s academic needs and ensure that they did all in their power to provide them with basic learning materials.
