Junior Graphic Essay Contest launched

The acting Director, News of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mrs Mavis Kitcher, has advised basic schoolchildren to make the Junior Graphic newspaper their companion while in school to help widen their horizons.

She said reading the newspaper would not only make them academically excellent but would give them a wealth of knowledge which is what they would need and depend on as adults.

“While you are in basic school, if you don’t read the Junior Graphic, then you are missing out a lot because the Junior Graphic does not just educate you on what you learn in school but gives insights into the world around you.”

“There are so many things we publish in the Junior Graphic that you don’t learn in the classroom,” she said.

Mrs Kitcher, who is also the Editor of the Junior Graphic, gave the advice at the launch of the 2019 Junior Graphic National Essay Writing Competition which is on the theme: “Reading widely, writing right: Key to excellence”.

The essay competition is an annual event of the Graphic Communications Group Limited, publishers of the Junior Graphic and is open to all basic schoolchildren.

She explained that this year’s competition was meant to build on what was done the previous year, hence the theme.

“This year, we are not only looking at academic excellence but to ensure that children who participate in the contest appreciate living with others as citizens of the country and to make their voices heard on issues which affect them,” she stressed.

Mrs Kitcher explained that that was why some of the essay topics would be on child rights which we have talked about a lot in the Junior Graphic and also the Sustainable Development Goals.”

She encouraged children to make their voices heard through writing, adding that that was why the newspaper is offering them that opportunity through the essay competition.

Speaking about the competition, Mr Franklin Sowa, the Director, Marketing of the GCGL, said the company had over the years seen a lot of excitement and competitive spirit among children who participated in the essay competition.

He said aside from helping to improve on their writing skills, the competition was also meant to engage the schoolchildren who were one of the critical audiences of the newspaper to participate in news creation.

The acting Director of Education, USAID Ghana, Ms Yvette Malcioln, who launched the competition, expressed the commitment of her outfit to work with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to help every child reach his or her full potential through reading, writing, arithmetic and creativity.

There were messages from the sponsors of competition namely Twellium Industries, BiC, TLM Ghana, producers of Graidup tablets; Cocoa Processing Company, SDGs Advisory Unit, Office of the President and the Ghana Library Authority.

Some of the schoolchildren present entertained guests with poetry recitals on the relevance of reading.
