Don’t play with fire extinguishers

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned minors not to play with fire extinguishers in order not to hurt themselves.

“If the fire extinguishers are not properly operated, the chemicals can go into your eyes and harm them,” the Public Relations Officer of the Service, DO111 Prince Billy Anaglate has advised.

DO111 Anaglate, in an interview with the Junior Graphic, said it had come to the notice of the service that some children were fond of playing with fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment installed in schools and homes.

He cited the case of a girl whose eyes were badly hurt when her younger brother who was playing with a fire extinguisher, accidentally sprayed the chemical into his eyes.

“Fire extinguishers are not to be played with so parents and teachers should ensure that minors do not have access to them,” he cautioned.

DO111 Anaglate stated that it was to avoid such accidents that during their visits to schools, they rather educated children on how to prevent fires and what to do in case of fire outbreaks and did not teach them how to handle the extinguishers.

Meanwhile, DO111 Anaglate said the service had now begun the formation of fire safety clubs in basic schools to teach how children could protect themselves from fires.
