Children’s Park cries for help

One of Accra's most cherished playgrounds for children, the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, is gradually losing most of its play equipment.

The once beautiful devices which included a children's train and spinning machines, as well as benches under the large trees are now in a sorry state.

The current situation is a worry for both children and parents who send their kids to the park for programmes.

The Data Officer at the Children's Department, Mr Daniel Ampadu Nkansah who was speaking with the Junior Graphic, said the department was fully aware of the problems at the park.

He said most of the equipment were outmoded and needed replacement explaining that a committee had been set up to see to the development and recreation of the park.

Mr Nkansah said, the committee had for instance,  decided to replace all the outmoded equipment, citing an example of the train which was currently broken down but “the parts are difficult to come by so we are considering another option,” he added.

He also said the spinning machine was found to consume a lot of power which led to the destruction of the underground cables connected to it.

Consequently, he said, the department resorted to the use of a generator but the Electricity Company of Ghana had now been contacted to work on the underground cables to enable the spinning machine work again.

Mr Nkansah said, a horticulturalist had also been contacted to identify the appropriate vegetation for the park.

The Children’s Park used to have many play equipment such as the chunku-chaka train, spinning machine, bouncy castles, merry-go-round, see-saw and horse rides.

He said an arts centre, a garden and a playground for various sports would be revived to give the park a befitting status and address the needs of children who go there to play, as well as learn.

Mr Nkansah gave the assurance that the art and craft shop for children would also be revived.
