Prof Addy — A mentor to countless girls

 

Professor Marian Ewurama Addy, the popular host of the National Science and Maths Quiz television programme - Brilliant Science and Maths Quiz has passed on. She was 72.

Prof. Ewurama Addy died after a short illness on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

She was the first woman professor of science from the University of Ghana and a resource person for science education programmes in the country.

As the Quiz Mistress of the weekly science and mathematics quiz programme on television, she contributed immensely to science education by making the subject interesting to Ghanaians of all ages.

It is believed that her quiz mistress role inspired many female students to study science.

Prof. Addy, who served as a mentor to countless young girls will be remembered for her academic excellence, brilliance and guts.

Biography

Prof. Addy was a Professor of Biochemistry. She was educated at the St Monica’s Secondary School and then continued to the University of Ghana, where she studied for a degree in Botany. She later obtained Master’s and  Doctorate degrees in Biochemistry at the Pennsylvania, State University, USA.

As head of units or departments in various institutions, Prof. Addy was responsible for initiating projects, running workshops and looking for funds for these activities as well as for younger scientists in training.

In the 70s, she took leave from the University of Ghana to become the Director of Programmes for the Science Education Programme for Africa (SEPA), a Pan-African programme for pre-tertiary science education, which was based in Accra.

Due to her vast experiences she taught biochemistry, both basic and applied, to undergraduate, postgraduate, dental and medical students at the University of Ghana, Legon and Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC.

Awards

Professor Addy received many awards including:

• The Millennium Excellence Award for Educational Development at the turn of the millennium.

• UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the popularisation of science in 1999.

• The Africa-America Institute’s Distinguished Alumna for Excellence in 1998.

• Marketing Woman of the Year (1995), for marketing Science.

• She was made a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999.

Family

Prof. Addy was married to Mr Ebenezer Charles Oko Addy, a Sociologist and one time athlete who won a gold medal in the 4 x 100 relay race at the Commonwealth Games in Kingston, Jamaica in 1966. They were blessed with two daughters - Naa Lamiley Addy-Sadowsky and Lamiokor Esi Addy.
