Trump accuses China of attempts to interfere in US elections

US President, Donald Trump, has accused China of attempting to interfere in his country’s 2018 midterm elections in November.

While being sketchy about the details of the accusations, the American President said Asian economic power doesn’t want his party to win because of the growing trade spat between the two countries.

“Regrettably, we’ve found that China has been attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election coming up in November against my administration,” Mr. Trump said in his opening remarks as President of this year’s UN Security Council session.

“They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade,” he said.

While stating that he had great respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping, Mr Trump said he had told his Chinese counterpart that the trade deficit was unacceptable.

When he took his turn, the Chinese Foreign Minister shot down the accusations inspiring China had a traditional foreign policy of no interference in the affairs of other countries.

Triggering what China calls “the largest trade war in economic history,” the U.S. on July 6 imposed a 25 percent duty on $34 billion of Chinese imports.

China immediately responded with tariffs on U.S. soybeans, meat and vehicles.

The two has since been involved in a wave of retaliatory tariff hikes.
