White House placed on lockdown after woman throws object over fence

The White House was placed on a partial security lockdown during the Memorial Day holiday, after a woman threw something over the north fence along Pennsylvania Avenue.

A woman was detained and placed in handcuffs, while fire trucks and a hazardous materials response unit were called to the scene. It is common for secret service officers to sweep the grounds after such incidents, in this case to ensure nothing dangerous was thrown over the fence.

A secret service official told Reuters hazardous material checks were being made.

The secret service would not allow reporters to leave the White House compound through its western gate and flashing lights from emergency responders could be seen nearby.

Barack Obama had visited Arlington Cemetery earlier in the day, as part of the annual commemoration for armed services members.
