Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has informed Manchester United that he does not wish to join them.
United made a £22.5 million offer for the 29-year-old on Tuesday and were told to double their bid for the Germany international who is valued at £45m.
However, Boateng subsequently held talks with his coach Niko Kovac who informed him he could still play a role at Bayern.
Boateng is then understood to have contacted Jose Mourinho to say he no longer wished to move to Old Trafford.
United have been struggling to get their targets over the line in the past week.
They have made contact again with Barcelona for Yerry Mina who has an agreement in place with Everton.
The Goodison Park club also want United's Marcos Rojo but he is yet to agree to leave.
Meanwhile, Bernard’s medical at Everton has been pushed back to Wednesday as he requires a work permit before completing his free transfer.
