The Eastern and Greater Accra (EGA) Zone on Thursday won their first gold at the 10th edition of the Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA) Games in Tamale.
The entire EGA contingent have not lived up to expectation so far in the biennial competition having lost most of the events to their contenders.
However on Thursday, the netball team lifted the spirits of the entire contingent after beating their Ashanti/Brong Ahafo counterparts 16-11 in the final game at the Tamale College of Education.
Impressively, the netball team won all their initial three games against Northern Zone (21-07), Central/Western (18-14) and Volta Zone (15-12) before meeting Ashanti/Brong Ahafo in the final.
In a post-event interview, an elated head coach, Eric Owusu Obeng, attributed their achievement to hard work and dedication.
"It's so refreshing that finally the netball team has won gold for Eastern and Greater Accra. Last two years we didn't do well but this time we prepared very well and I am happy that the ladies have delivered the ultimate, " he said.
Meanwhile, the Northern Zone grabbed gold in the women's volleyball event at the expense of the EGA Zone after recording a 2-0 win in the final game on Thursday.
The win brings their total haul to three gold medals after winning the cross country (men) and the badminton (men).
The first COESA games was held at Takoradi in 2012, the 2014 edition was hosted by Akatsi while the last one was held in Accra.
Before the formation of COESA in January, 2011, the Teacher Training Colleges competed under the name National Teacher Training Colleges (NATTCO) Games.
