The high hopes of the national female hockey team came crashing on Thursday after losing the bronze medal to Zimbabwe who won 2-1 in the third-placed match of the just-ended Africa Youth Games in Algeria.
The Ghanaians not only failed to win a medal, but also missed an opportunity to represent the continent at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games scheduled for Argentina.
A day earlier, the team had lost 1-2 to Namibia in their semi-final clash to miss an opportunity to fight for either gold or silver in the final. It was the second defeat suffered by the Ghanaians at the hands of their Namibian counterparts, having earlier lost 2-3 to the southern Africans on July 20 at the group phase.
Against Zimbabwe, Ghana went down through early goals by Alexi Terblanche and Simone Harbst in the 13th and 15th minutes respectively before Charity Akoto redeemed a goal for Ghana in the 17th minute.
Ghana launched a late attack as the game wore on but failed to penetrate the defensive wall of Zimbabwe, thus failing to claim a medal and returning home empty-handed.
South Africa won the gold medal after defeating Namibia 2-0 to earn the right to represent Africa at the Youth Olympic Games in October.
