Ghana beat Mali 8-7 on penalties to win bronze

Ghana’s Black Queens on Saturday defeated Mali 8-7 on penalties to win bronze at the 2019 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone B Tournament at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan.

Following a barren first half, the two sides continued pushing for the opener in the second half but failed to convert any of chances they created as the game ended in a stalemate.

After referee Madu N’didi from Nigeria whistled for the spot kicks, the Queens took their chances with unerring confidence while goalkeeper and captain of the team, Fafali Dumehasi also made a crucial save to propel Ghana to another podium finish in the competition.

Grace Asantewa, Ellen Coleman, Alice Kusi, Grace Animah, Gladys Amfobea, Rita Okyere, Evelyn Badu and Justice Tweneboaa skillfully converted their spot kicks but goalie Fafali was the heroine of the day as her last minute save made the difference after both sides were tied on seven goals.

Ghana’s Janet Nana Ama Egyir was adjudged the Woman of the Match, her second in the competition having won it earlier during Ghana’s Group A opener against Senegal.
