Some referees have hailed the appointment of Mr Alexander Neequaye Kotey as Referees Manager.
Last week, the Executive Council and General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), named Mr Kotey as Referees Manager after a rigorous recruitment process by the Association. He will be offered a one-year renewable contract based on performance.
Reacting in separate interviews with Graphic Sports Online on Sunday, retired referee Thomas Kwasi Aggrey, Silas Okine, Mr Joe Debrah and referee Joseph Ayambila expressed satisfaction with the appointment of Mr. Kotey while commending the GFA for the decision.
“I am a retired referee but I’m particularly excited about the decision to appoint referee Kotey as manager because he is a unifier and I believe he will unite the people. This is a good initiative by the GFA, especially at a time when the RAG appears divided so I’m sure this will help to fix the situation,” said retired referee Thomas K. Aggrey.
For his part, Chairman of RAG, Mr. Joe Debrah, who was part of the erstwhile Normalisation Committee (NC) adhoc Referees Committee, which drafted the referees’ appointment document currently implemented by the GFA said: “It is the proper thing to do per CAF and FIFA rules and it is good that the current GFA administration has come to implement it. This will bring a lot of improvement in officiating in the various leagues.”
Retired referee Silas Okine tagged Mr Kotey as the right person to manage affairs and unite the members of the RAG.
“I think with the Referees Manager, the person they selected deserves it. Mr Kotey is an experienced referee and I believe he will bring his experience on board to make things work at RAG,” said Silas Okine.
He continued: “a Referees Manager should be somebody who has a vision and can unite the members. He must also know the issues related to CAF and FIFA and I think Mr. Kotey is that person.”
For Western Region-based referee Joseph Ayambila, Mr Kotey is the right person to fix the broken pieces at the RAG.
“I think a lot of things happened in the past in RAG which I, personally was not happy about but I think these committees formed by the GFA, especially the Referees Manager position will put things in order and restructure the association. Referee Kotey is someone I believ can do the job looking at his experience,” he said.
The Referees Manager will perform, among others, the following duties: assist the Referees Committee, Implement decisions adopted by the Referees Committee, Carry out all tasks related to the logistics of Refereeing, Carry out all administrative duties of the Refereeing Department, and Implement programmes to develop Referees according to the guidelines approved by the Referees Committee.
The GFA also named Executive Council member, Frederick Acheampong as leader of the newly created Referees Assessors and Classification Panel and he will be assisted by retired FIFA referee Justice Yeboah and Emmanuella Aglago as members.
