Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has given the reason why he withdrew goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at half time during their Tuesday Champions League draw against Club Brugge.
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane says he withdrew goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois at half time during their Tuesday Champions League draw against Club Brugge because he was suffering from a stomach problem and couldn’t continue with the match .
Madrid found themselves two goals down by half time following a double from Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis, and Courtois was heavily criticized for his failure to do better for both of Dennis’ goals, especially the first, as the Brugge striker completely fumbled with the ball, but it managed to trickle past the Madrid goalkeeper.
Many were surprised to see Courtois fail to emerge after the half-time break as he was replaced by Alphonse Areola.
But Madrid confirmed after the match that Courtois was suffering from sickness and was unable to continue. Reports claimed that Courtois had been suffering from illness earlier in the day but he was not pulled out of the match.
Second-half goals from Sergio Ramos and Casemiro rescued a draw for Madrid, who have failed to win either one of their opening two Champions League group games for the first time in history.
