Captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been left off Portugal's squad for two upcoming matches in the newly introduced UEFA Nations League next week.
No reason has been assigned by coach Fernando Santos on his decision to leave out the Juventus star, who is considered an influential member of the team.
It is, however, being speculated that he is being given time off as he fights a rape allegation from a teacher.
Ronaldo's absence from the squad means he will play no role in the 2016 European champions' game against Poland on October 11. He will also miss a friendly match against Scotland in Glasgow on October 15.
Cristiano Ronaldo has strongly denied the rape allegations made against him by a teacher in Las Vegas
Ronaldo has been in the news the past week, vehemently denying a rape charge made against him by 34-year-old teacher, Kathryn Mayorga, who claims that the Juventus forward raped her in June 2009 in a Las Vegas hotel room.#
Ronaldo, 33, tweeted on Wednesday that he "firmly" denies the accusation - his first direct denial of the allegations .
"Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in," the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star said.
"Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.
"My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations."
Leslie Stovall said his client, Kathryn Mayorga, had had a difficult time over the last nine years.
A lawsuit has been filed by the woman against Ronaldo, and police in Las Vegas have re-opened their investigation.
The lawsuit claims Ms Mayorga was coerced into signing a $375,000 out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo in 2010.
She wants the agreement to be declared void and said she gained the courage to speak out because of the #MeToo movement.
The Me Too movement (or #MeToo movement), with many local and international alternatives, is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault.
It has seen many women, especially in the entertainment industry, in recent times, coming out to boldly speak about being sexually harrassed on the job.
