Cameroun legend Samuel Eto'o says Argentina and Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, is more deserving of the 2018 Best FIFA Men's Player award won by Luka Modric of Croatia on Monday. He beat Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo and Egypt's Mohamed Salah to the coveted title.

Modric enjoyed a brilliant season in which he captained Croatia to their first FIFA World Cup final in Russia and clinched a third successive UEFA Champions League crown with Real Madrid.

Also many believe the midfielder is deserving of the award after an amazing year for club and country, Eto'o is convinced that the best candidate to win the topmost individual prize in world football was robbed.

The Camerounian striker enjoyed his best years playing for Barcelona, from 2004 to 2009, in which he witnessed the emergence of  Messi.

The Argentina international did not enjoy the best World Cup campaign in Russia, won the Spanish La Liga crown with the Catalan club who were eliminated in the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

Nonetheless, Eto'o maintains that Messi remains the best footballer on the planet.

"Leo, for us, will always be the best player in the world ever," he told beIN SPORTS.

"Human beings have to choose and they chose those three players, who have done well this year too.But for people like me and others, it doesn't change the fact that Leo is the best player in the world ever."
