Ghana's Ashantigold FC will begin their 2019-2020 CAF Confederation Cup campaign with an away match against Equatorial Guinean side, Akonangui when the competition kicks off on the weekend of August 9 to 11.
Ashgold will host the return leg on the weekend of August 23 to 25. If they win, they will host the first leg of the second round against Renaissance Sportive de Berkane of Morocco in on the weekend of September 13 to 15 .
In all, 69 countries will participate in the 2019-2020 Confed Cup
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) held the draw yesterday and as per the reforms adopted two years ago, has come out with a schedule in sync with the international calendar of a August to May timeline.
The competition will start in August and end in May 2020, though the exact date and venue is yet to be named after CAF at its Executive Committee meeting in Cairo last week, also decided that the final will be a one match play-off instead of the known two-leg with the two finalists each hosting one leg.
Ashgold earned the right to represent Ghana in the upcoming season’s continental competition after winning the Second Tier of the Special Competition organized by the Normalisation Committee to keep clubs busy after almost 10 months of inactivity brought about by the suspension of in local competition in Ghana football following the Anas Amereyaw Anas’ expose in June 6, 2018.
Ashgold making a return to the continental competition after almost eight years. Finalists at the 1997 Champions League, Ashgold played their last Confed Cup competition in 2011, eliminated at the first round. Previously, they had been quarter-finalists at the 2001 Confed Cup.
They will attempt to not reach the money zone after missing out in previous years, but will also try to win the trophy and possibly claim the $1.25million at stake as prize for the champions.
