Egypt will look to poster boy Mohamed Salah for inspiration to defeat South Africa to reach the quarter-finals

Egypt will look to continue their march to the finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament when they take on South Africa in the knockout stage match on Saturday.

The Pharaohs are hot favourites to progress to the next stage, having qualified with 100% record from the group, scoring five unanswered goals in the process.

Road to the round of 16
They first beat Zimbabwe 1-0 in the opening match but settled well to register 2-0 identical wins against Uganda and DR Congo in the remaining group matches, with all their goals coming in the first half.

Bafana Bafana, on the other hand, qualified as one of the best third-placed teams, having lost two of their matches and winning one.

They went down 1-0 against Elephants in the first match, before managing to beat Namibia 1-0 in the second match. They, however, conceded a 91st-minute goal in the last match to lose 1-0 to Morocco.

Head to head
The two nations have met 11 times since November 25, 1995, and the South Africans will be buoyed by the fact that they last lost to Egypt during the Nelson Mandela Challenger over a decade ago.

They have also won three of the teams' last five meetings, losing just once, with the Pharaohs struggling in most cases.

However, Stuart Baxter's men look far off from the sides that won against the Egyptians, who look like favourites to lift the continental title.

Overall, Bafana Bafana have won six of their 11 previous matches against Egypt while losing four and drawing once.

Key players
Mohammed Salah is the obvious standout player from the Egyptian side, However, the Liverpool man has not shone as expected, even though he has found the net twice.

Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim Hassan, better known as Trezeguet, seems to be the key player for the side and has dictated play for the hosts through the matches.

One other player who's having a good tournament so far is captain Ahmed Elmohamady, whose leadership and goalscoring abilities have put him on the African Map.
