Three of Ghana’s finest amateur boxers and a coach left Accra on Sunday for Turkey to participate in the Ahmed Juma International Boxing tournament.

The boxers are welterweight Jessie Lartey, who won Ghana’s only bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Australian city of Gold Coast, light welterweight Wahid Omar and bantamweight Suleman Tetteh.

According to the president of Ghana Boxing Federation president , Mr George Lamptey, the five-day event which started on Monday was being held is in honour of Turkish Olympian, Ahmed Human.

He said the trip was organised to keep the nation’s top amateur boxers in shape, as well as to enable them gain experience and exposure.

Mr Lamptey added that the federation decided to support the boxers as it is difficult depending on government for such events.

He advocated for the establishment of a payment scheme where amateur boxers who devoted their time to box for the nation would put on a salary scheme to reduce the temptation to rush prematurely to join the professional ranks.
