THE Ghana Hockey Association (GHA) is rolling out a programme to build four Astroturfs in the Greater Accra, Ashanti, Central and Northern regions.
Also to benefit from the programme, which involves the provision of flood lights, water sprinkling system and a scoreboard, are hockey players and fans in and around the University of Ghana, Legon.
The President of the GHA, Dr K D Asante, who briefed Graphic Sports Online on the programme, said the GHA was collaborating with three companies, CC Grass, MUSCO and Daktronics, to develop the hockey pitches in and outside Accra.
“As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, CC Grass, a construction firm, is providing four Astroturfs at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra, Legon Campus, Kumasi and Cape Coast with the view to making hockey much more visible and attractive in such areas,” Dr Asante explained.
He said the present Astroturf at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium would be rolled out and sent to Tamale to enable players in the north to develop their potential as well.
Beside providing the Astroturfs, he said scoreboards and floodlights would also be provided to enable teams to enjoy such facilities.
He said while MUSCO, a construction firm, would provide the floodlights, Daktronics was in charge of erecting scoreboards on all the new hockey pitches.
According to Dr Asante, CC Grass was going through the procurement process and he was hopeful that by the end of the third quarter of the year, they would have finished providing the turfs.
“We are also ordering water sprinkling systems to water the turfs during competitive matches and training programmes. I estimate that by the end of the third quarter, all the materials will be ready for constructional works be begin,” he stated.
“Developing the hockey pitches is very important because it will improve patronage and enthusiasm of the game across the country,” he said.
