What ladies carry as handbags
I happened to have opened a colleague’s bag in search of a pen at the office, but what I saw almost took me into a trance. I stood rooted to my grounds for as many minutes as I could not count. I was shocked and for whatever reason began wondering why I saw what I saw.

Believe it or not, I chanced on toothpaste, toothbrush, a brassiere and a liquid polish.
The owner of the bag, upon noticing my state of confusion, walked up to me and asked, “Have you found what you are looking for?” “How possible?” I countered.
She smiled and gladly offloaded what was supposed to be her handbag as I dropped my jaw. Not a single paper or office work-related item was in the bag.
To my surprise, the bag contained two shirts, one skirt, a hair pomade, a comb, powder, deodorant spray, underwear, a pair of sandals and a jeans trouser. Funnily enough, this was a Monday morning.
She pulled a chair for me to relax as she explained why she carried all that stuff in her bag to the office.
“The gate of my house is locked at 9:00 p.m. but I stay out longer than that because I close late from work and most of the time I have to sleep outside my home. I always keep stuff like this because I will have to change for work the next day,” she said.
Even though it is perceived that big bags (travelling bag) are meant for containing such stuffs, my handbag does not fall into this category because it is not big enough to be called that.
Out of curiosity, I decided to know what a bag is, which bag is suitable for which occasion, place and events.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a bag is a container of flexible material with an opening at the top used for carrying things.
With types such as tote bags, leather cross body, shoulder bags, Hobo bags, Canvas satchel, shopper bag, Canvas tote, Croco satchel and Half moon shoulder bag.
A handbag, for many women, is a way of showing their fashion taste. Bags are not just items to be carried about as they tell a lot about a woman’s style.
Often, luxury designer bags of signature styles come with brands which ladies choose for their attractiveness, durability or the prestige associated with it. They include Chloe, Hermes, Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuiton, Versace, Marc Jacobs, Micheal kors, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana and Dior.
Handbags come in various colours ranging from gray taupe, black, hot pink, coffee brown , green, red, off white to beige, light blue, orange and yellow. There are bags with the blend of two or more colours which is the latest fashion.
Most women do not step out without clutching a handbag and those who are handbag freaks have different bags for different occasions.
The clutch handbags are mostly used for formal occasions such as banquet or dinner parties in the evening. That explains why clutch bags are also called evening bags.
The Tote bags, on the other hand, often contain many pockets and some are internally lined with zipper pockets. They can be used for different occasions because they are usually graceful and elegant.
Messenger bags, which were originally used to transport goods, are now mostly used by young women as they come in different types with its casual look that is nonetheless appealing because they easily match with formal clothes. Apart from these, there are sling bags, backpack, satchel and Hermes.
Some women attach importance to handbags with the idea of having different bags for different occasions. And they do not mind spending their last penny to purchase a bag.
Efua Mensah, a student, said most women booght many bags for different purposes.
“Bags that you take to your office would perhaps not be suitable for a dinner outing. And when you need to carry more things, you will need a bigger bag,” she added.
Apart from its make-up and dressing reasons bags also enhance outward appearance to look more glamorous and women might choose to carry bags that match their clothes.
Women who carry handbags to protect their valuable items such as laptops, phones, makeup kits and cash should always remember that if they lose their bag, they will lose its content as well.
Before you step out to town, just check and be sure that your bag complements your dressing, occasion and place.
