Vasectomy: Scaring Ghanaian men?

Is vasectomy catching up with Ghanaian men yet? How likely are you to choose vasectomy as a family planning method? Are women encouraging their husbands to go for that option? A qualitative study carried out recently reveals poor knowledge about vasectomy among Ghanaians. 

The knowledge on vasectomy is characterised by a lot of misconceptions and inaccurate information. Below are just two quotes from some study participants, who associated vasectomy with impotency and castration.

“Vasectomy is like going to buy impotency.”

“I learnt they do it like the way it is done for male goats to prevent them from ‘giving birth.’”

The truth, however, is that vasectomy is nowhere near castration or impotency. Indeed, the two are separate procedures. Castration is any action; surgical, chemical, or otherwise, by which a male loses use of the testicles.
