When completed, the centre will have a FIFA-standard football pitch, a modern nine-lane athletic track, lawn tennis, basketball, handball and volleyball courts and a gymnasium.

It will also have a counselling centre, an ICT centre, an entrepreneurship centre and a modern restaurant.

Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, President Akufo-Addo assured the chiefs and the people of Adaklu that the government would continue to construct more sports resource centres.

He said in fulfilment of the pledge he made in the run-up to the 2016 general election, the government had begun the construction of ranches across the country.

“The first ranch has been established at the Afram Plains and we have chosen several sites around the country where we are going to establish these ranches in order to bring the cattle into safe, secure environments, so that the desecration of the land you are witnessing here will become a thing of the past,” he added.

Yesterday was the second day of the President’s three-day tour of the Volta Region.

For his part, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Asiamah, said the construction of multi-purpose youth and sports centres of excellence in the 10 regions was being done at the behest of President Akufo-Addo.

Durbar

Later, addressing a durbar of the chiefs and the people of Adaklu, President Akufo-Addo urged the people of the southern half of the Volta Region not to be acrimonious about the demand by their counterparts in the northern part for a new region.

He said the demand for a new region, for which he had triggered the constitutional processes for its creation, was no mean an attempt to ignite ethnic antagonism between the people who had coexisted peacefully for years in the region.

Benefits

Instead, he said, the creation of the proposed Oti Region, as recommended by the Justice Brobbey Commission, would inure to the benefit of the people of the region and implored the chiefs to wholeheartedly support the process.

He explained that there was no political underpinning to the exercise except to improve the governance of the country.

“The people of the Volta Region have coexisted for a very long time and I do not foresee this restructuring of the region ending that harmonious relationship,” he said.

The President later inspected ongoing works at the permanent site of the University of Health and Allied Sciences.
