People and Places: Otoobuor Djan Kwasi II

Otoobuor Djan Kwasi II is a highly revered traditional leader in Ghana. He is the Chief of Aburi (Aburihene) and doubles as the Adontenhene of Akuapem.

Aburi, a town in the Eastern Region of Ghana and located in the Akuapem hills is known for its scenic beauty, botanical gardens and cultural significance.

Known as Ohene Kwasi Fianko in private life, Otoobuor was born on March 15, 1956, to the prestigious Aku Badu house of Nsakye and the Aduana Abrade Clan.

On February 29, 1988, Ohene Kwasi Fianko was enstooled as the 23rd occupant of the renowned Osae Stool, under the stool name of Nana Djan Kwasi II. This marked the beginning of his remarkable journey as the Aburihene and Adontenhene of Akuapem.

In just a year after his installation, due to his humility and style of leadership, he earned the title ‘Otoobuor’ which was originally ‘Oto ne bo’, meaning ‘one who takes his time to do things’.

This came about when he called on Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, then Asantehene, at Manhyia in Kumasi. It is said that during their interaction, the Otumfuo described him as a calm person who takes his time to do things, thus kept using the phrase ‘oto ne bo’. This has since been corrupted to ‘Otoobour’ which can be translated as ‘the stone thrower’

As Aburihene, Otoobuor Djan Kwasi II has been a strong advocate for community development and progress.

He has championed various causes, including road safety, environmental protection and sustainable development. Notably, he appealed to the government to elevate the Akuapem South District to a municipality, highlighting Aburi's rich history and potential for growth.

Beyond his public roles, Otoobuor Djan Kwasi II is a devoted family man and philanthropist. The Otoobuor Foundation, a non-profit organisation, was established to develop sustainable programmes and services in Aburi, focusing on community development, education and entrepreneurship.

The foundation aims to improve the quality of life for Aburiman and Ghanaians at large.
