GCTU unveils 7 new Professors 

The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has made seven new professorial appointments to raise the status of the institution and position it as the most preferred university for the teaching and learning of Information Communications Technology (ICT) and its related fields.

 The appointments, the first of their kind since the institution attained the status as a fully-fledged public university, is in tandem with the mentorship drive and vision of the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa. 

Prof. Afoakwa has pledged to help mentor  20 lecturers in the institution to become professors by the year 2030. 

The GCTU VC's vision of mentoring Ph.D. holders to become professors, which was first announced at the annual Breakfast Meeting of the university in January this year, is also expected to help position GCTU as a world-class institution training the next generation of professionals to support the growth of the industry.

The highly respected AD Scientific Index 2022 ranked Prof. Afoakwa the topmost Scientist in the field of Technology and Engineering as well as Food Science and Technology in both GCTU and Ghana.

Prof. Stephen Asunka

Prof. Stephen Asunka holds MA and D.Ed degrees in Computing, Communication and Technology in Education from Columbia University, New York, USA, and a Postgraduate Certificate in International Higher Education Practice from Coventry University. He originally trained as a Chemist and, thus, holds BSc and MPhil degrees in Chemistry from the University of Ghana. He has extensive teaching and research experience in some Ghanaian institutions, including the University of Ghana, Regent University College of Science & Technology, Methodist University College and the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT. He has also held administrative positions, including Head of Department, Campus Director and Director of ICT, and is presently the acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at GCTU.

Prof. Dr Ing. Ezer Osei Yeboah-Boateng

Prof. Yeboah-Boateng is a professional Telecoms Engineer and ICT Specialist with strong hands-on expertise in a wide range of telecommunications switching systems, revenue assurance, cyber-security, digital forensics, business development, digital transformation, project management, change management, knowledge management, strategic IT-enabled business value creation and capabilities to develop market-oriented strategies aimed at promoting growth and market share.

Prof. Yeboah-Boateng has recently been appointed as the Deputy Director-General, Technical Operations of the National Communications Authority (NCA), where he brings his rich experience to promote the world-class communications regulator’s vision and mandate. Prof. Yeboah-Boateng is an executive with over 25 years of domestic and global experience in conceptualising ideas, seizing opportunities, building operations and leading highly successful new business development initiatives and ventures. He has served in his capacity as a Team Leader, Project Manager, Project Coordinator and Lead Researcher on various projects which cut across both international and local institutions, including projects in the areas of telecommunications infrastructure, cyber security, cloud computing, digital forensics and internet and network integration technologies, with additional experience related to dealing with refurbished and overstock telecommunications equipment and manufacturing.

Prof. Yeboah-Boateng has a Ph.D. in ICT from Aalborg University in Copenhagen, Denmark; an M.S. in Telecommunications (magna-cum-Laude) from Stratford University, Falls Church, VA in USA; and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from the University of Science & Technology (UST) in Kumasi, Ghana.

Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey

Prof. Frank Gyimah Sackey is an Economist and Microeconometrician with a research interest in gender, development and financial economics. He is currently the acting Director of the Institute of Distance Education and E-learning (IDEEL). He holds an M.Phil in Economics from the University of Cape Coast, a PhD in Economics (International Distinction) from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Tarrgona, Spain and is a Marti Franqués Fellow of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili. Prof. Sackey’s professional career started from the School of Economics at the University of Cape Coast as a Senior Research Assistant where he lectured in Economics at the undergraduate level.

He later joined the Catholic University College of Ghana as a lecturer. In 2013, he left for Spain to pursue a Ph.D. on a Marti Franqués Fellowship at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili, one of the top public universities in the Catalan Region. Whilst there, he lectured in International Economic Relations, attracting a lot of students on the Erasmus exchange programme for three consecutive years in the Campus Terres de l’Ebre, Reus. In 2016, he returned to the Catholic University College of Ghana upon completion of his Ph.D. as a Lecturer and later rose to the rank of Senior Lecturer and Dean of the School of Research and Graduate Studies. It was during his time that the university’s MBA and MPH programmes had large enrolments as quality was assured. In 2019, he joined the now Ghana Communication Technology University as the Head of the Economics Department and now the Director of IDEEL.

Prof. George Oppong Appiagyei Ampong

Prof. George Oppong Appiagyei Ampong is the Dean of the GCTU Business School. He holds PG Cert in International Higher Education Academic Practice from Coventry University in 2017, a Ph.D. in Business Administration in 2013 from the Business University of Costa Rica, MSc in Health Services Planning & Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 1999 and a BA (Hons) in Philosophy & Religion from the University of Ghana in 1996. He has an 11-year teaching career in management courses such as Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, Public Administration, Business Administration and Corporate Governance. He was also the Director of the Kumasi Campus of the GCTU from 2014 to 2015.

He has 26 years’ experience in managing non-profit and voluntary organisations, organisational development and administration, 12 years in private enterprises and organisation and five years in public service. Before joining the academia, he held leadership and managerial positions as Chief Executive Officer, Head of Administration and Finance and Programme Manager.

He initiated the Entrepreneurship Hub at the Business School in GCTU responsible for entrepreneurship development, including capacity building, business incubation and mentorship for business start-ups within the university community. He is also team lead for GCTU in the Ghana Innovation Hub (2.1-million-dollar e-transform project) of the Ministry of Communication, with support from the World Bank, in consortium with MDF-West Africa and BlueSpace Africa.

Besides teaching and research, Prof. George Oppong Appiagyei Ampong has rendered service to the university and the national and international community in various capacities.

Prof. Kofi Bobi Barimah

Prof. Kofi Bobi Barimah was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at the Ghana Communications Technology University (GCTU) on August 1, 2021. He first joined the then Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) in 2015 as the Director of Research and Consultancy at the Office of Research Services and Innovation. He was appointed the acting Executive Director at the Centre for Plant Medicine Research at Mampong Akwapem from June 2019 to March 2022 on secondment from GTUC.

Before relocating to Ghana from Canada in 2003, Prof. Barimah had over 12 years experience in health promotion and community development in the non-profit sector both at the managerial and grass-roots levels in Canada.

Prof. Barimah received both his ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level certificates from Prempeh College, Kumasi, Ghana. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon; his Master of Science degree in Rural Extension Studies from the University of Guelph, Canada; his Master of Arts degree in Community Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada; and his Doctor of Philosophy in Public Health from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom.


Prof. Kester Quist-Aphetsi

Prof. Kester Quist-Aphetsi is a Global Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence Expert, Consultant, Scientist, Engineer and Technologist. He is a member of DEFCON, the world’s largest hacker group. He has led several scientific research and development projects and organised top scientific conferences in the sector of artificial intelligence, cyber security, data science etc. He is a specialist in cyber security, cryptography, computational intelligence and signal processing.

He is the acting Dean for FoCIS at the GCTU. He is a security researcher and supervising Ph.D. research projects with the LabSTICC IRIS Team « Pôle d’Excellence Cyber ». The team is deeply involved in several projects related to cyber security: the Chair of Naval Cyber Defence, the Cyber SSI CPER project, the joint research laboratory with Airbus Defense & Space etc.

He is a Laureate of the Millennium Excellence Awards and the winner of the President's Outstanding Youth Prize for Excellence in Technology. He was also awarded a Senior Member of ACM, the Association of Computing Machinery, USA. ACM is the highest computing body in the world that awards the Alan Turing Awards (The Nobel Prize in computing). He is a member of the International Association for Cryptologic Research.

He had his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Applications with distinction from Université de Bretagne Occidentale, Brest in France, and Master of Software Engineering degree from the Open University Malaysia with thesis area in Information Security. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana and acquired Professional Diploma certification with Distinction in Business Management and Administration from the Institute of Commercial Management, United Kingdom, as well as a Diploma in Project Management.

He has worked in various capacities as a lecturer (national and international universities) and head of Digital Forensics Department, Head of Computer Science Department, consultant to national and international reputable organisations and served as a presenter at seminars and workshops both in the academic and social environments.

Prof. Theresa Obuobisa-Darko

Prof. Theresa Obuobisa-Darko holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Administration and Policy Management, a Master of Philosophy in Public Administration, as well as a Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management option), all from the University of Ghana. Also, she obtained a Master’s degree in Organisational Development and a Bachelor of Education in Home Economics both from the University of Cape Coast. She is an expert in Leadership and Organisational Development and Human Resource Management. Prof. Obuobisa -Darko has more than 30 years teaching experience and has taught at all levels of the educational ladder, from the basic to the tertiary level. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Human Resource Management, Ghana and is currently an Associate Professor in Human Resource Management at the GCTU. Prior to joining GCTU, she taught at both graduate and undergraduate levels in the Department of Human Resource and Management Studies at the Methodist University College Ghana in Accra.
